Types of Survey

Pre-purchase-full condition survey

This is a full comprehensive survey that normally takes place prior to a purchase with the vessel out of the water.

The following is a list of the main items inspected during a survey.

  • Hull
  • Keel
  • Rudder
  • Deck/Superstructure
  • Machinery
  • Rig
  • Electrics
  • Plumbing
  • Skin Fittings
  • Gas Installation
  • Fuel Installation
  • Tankage
  • Stern gear/propeller
  • Cathodic protection

Following the survey the client receives a verbal summary followed by a full written report.  The report contains photographs to assist in clarifying the surveyor's findings.

Insurance survey

Similar to a full condition survey but normally carried out on vessels over 15 years old.  It includes an out of the water inspection and covers the structural integrity and general safety of the vessel.

MCA Code Compliance survey

If you wish to operate your vessel commercially, we are authorised by the RYA and IIMS Certifying Authorities to undertake examinations in connection with the MCA Small commercial Vessel Codes of Practice for vessels under 24m.

Damage Inspections

If your boat is damaged as a result of an accident you may require an inspection before and after repairs are carried out.  We carry out damage inspections on behalf of underwriters.

Valuations

A valuation is often requested at the time of survey for insurance purposes or when finance is being obtained to purchase a vessel.  Valuations may also be required for probate.

Sea Trials

A sea trial may be requested particularly on power vessels and is additional to a condition survey.  Oil analysis tests can be carried out on machinery and transmission.

Tonnage Measurement

We carry out Tonnage Measurements on vessels under 24m LOA on behalf of the IIMS and RYA for Part 1 registration.
